Diagnosis
- The major difference between Alzheimer’s disease and DLB is the dopaminergic avaliability.
- In DLB there is a 72% reduction in dopamine concentration in the putamen compared to elderly controls.[3] There is also a 57% reduction in binding to the dopamine uptake sites (presynaptic receptors) in DLB compared to controls. In contrast, binding to these dopamine uptake sites was similar between AD and control patients.[3]
- By imaging the nigrostriatal pathways, DaTSCAN could help distinquish probable DLB from Alzheimer’s disease.[2]
