The complete procedure takes about half a day to complete. An injectable solution is given intravenously
three to six hours before the scan. Patients must undergo appropriate thyroid blocking treatment prior to
injection to minimise thyroid uptake of radioactive iodine. Next a gamma camera is used to produce 3-D reconstructed images.
