Parkinsonian Syndromes - introduction
DaTSCAN can help differentiate essential tremor from Parkinsonian syndromes related
to
idiopathic Parkinson's disease, multiple system atrophy and progressive supranuclear palsy, in
patients with clinically uncertain Parkinsonian syndromes. DaTSCAN is unable to discriminate
between Parkinson's disease, multiple system atrophy and progressive supranuclear palsy.[4]

Indeed, research has shown that in patients with clinically uncertain Parkinsonian syndromes DaTSCAN may provide physicians with greater diagnostic confidence in a diagnosis of pre-synaptic or non pre-synaptic Parkinsonism, leading to changes in the clinical management of the majority of patients.[3]
"Accurate identification of Parkinsonism involving presynaptic degeneration is important for patient management, because the disease course, therapy and prognosis differ substantially from nondegenerative disease."[3]
